Sunshine, a Phinisi Liveaboard

KLM Sunshine is a stunning vessel crafted entirely from wood in the coastal town of Bira, South Sulawesi, following the ancient and revered Phinisi shipbuilding tradition. This time-honored craft, passed down through generations, is upheld by a dedicated group of master shipbuilders, all hailing from the same close-knit village. Their deep-rooted expertise and passion for the craft ensure that each ship they create is not just a mode of transportation, but a living testament to their cultural heritage. With each plank carefully placed, the legacy of Phinisi shipbuilding is preserved, blending timeless artistry with the skilled hands of those who continue to breathe life into this centuries-old tradition.

Built for Safety, Operated with Care

From the initial planning and construction to the day-to-day operations, every aspect of the boat has been designed with the highest safety standards in mind. Key safety features include a large emergency exit on the lower deck, smoke detectors throughout the vessel, and a wide array of fire extinguishers strategically placed across the boat, including in the cabins.

To ensure the safety of your electronic devices, we kindly request that they not be left unattended in the cabins. Instead, they can be safely charged in our designated charging area. Additionally, the boat is equipped with an ample supply of buoyancy aids and life belts, ensuring your safety at all times. Life rafts and life jackets—mandatory in Indonesia—are readily available for quick access in case of emergency.

Communication is key, and with Garmin trackers and satellite phones, we maintain constant contact with our base. The boat is also equipped with a Search and Rescue Transmitter (TRON AIS-SART), which is required and fully operational, as mandated by the harbor master’s office.

For emergencies, emergency oxygen and a fully stocked medical kit are available.

Diving with Nitrox is mandatory aboard the Sunshine, and we ensure all dives are conducted safely, within prescribed limits. As a proud, long-time member of the Indonesian Liveaboard Association (ILA) and legally registered as “Jangkar,” we adhere to the association’s Code of Ethics, ensuring a safe and professional experience for all guests.
